for seven astronauts who died doing what they loved most and worked devotedly to achieve, an aspiration that benefitted not just themselves and their families, but the entire world. Who did not defer potential to their children but acted upon it themselves, creating actual inspiration in the present as well as hypothetical inspiration for the future. Men and women, of different ethnicities and nationalities, who we could all look up to (literally).

It's terrible. I remember the Challenger (I was in high school at the time; home from school for the day because of snow, watching on TV), and then as now, I felt so sad because NASA is one of very few things the US government does that I can wholeheartedly support and be proud of. The only good thing to come of this is that no one seems to be talking about scaling back.
