Do you pay ANY attention to what you're typing?

Semi-coherent conspiracy theory post about rigged elections on one of my political communities. I was willing to play along until I got to this sentence: I believe that's why Barack came as hard as he did in his speech tonight mentioning Karl Rove.

EEEEEWWWWWWWW.

From context, I think there may have a "down" omitted. Anyone can make a typo, but to make such a spectacular one takes talent.

Yes, there was definitely a very small but very important word missing there. It's like the r it prostrate -- if you forget it, you're saying something else entirely.

That one's stayed with me for years. I wish it would go away.

Native speakers of English tend to write ei instead of ie in German words (because German i sounds like English e).

Unfortunately:
schießen = to shoot
scheißen = to shit

[identity profile] catherinecookmn.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. Some people I know a couple years ahead of me in high school in the mid-'70s were doing a video on Die Mauer for their German class, with the teacher behind the camera. (This was around the time of the first generation of home VHS video cameras.) The evil East German guard had the poor seekers of freedom in his sights, and the poor freedom-seekers meant to say "Schießen Sie nicht!" but what they actually said was "Scheißen Sie nicht!"

The teacher couldn't hold the camera steady from that point on, he was laughing so hard.

I first encountered it in a comic. There was a large group of Nazi soldiers after one poor lonely hero and then the head Nazi went "Start shitting!" ... and I was rolling on the floor laughing.

Not just a river in Egypt....

The squick is SO subjective. I instinctually recoiled--and yet I remembered that I actually wrote Obama/Keyes a few years back. (PG-13, though. Political slash is like Call of Cthulhu--the object is to hold on to your sanity as long as you can, though you know it's doomed.)

[identity profile] catherinecookmn.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Obama/Keyes doesn't squick me like Obama/Rove -- Keyes actually sounds like a genteel madman who might be decent if he was deprogrammed. Rove, on the other hand, comes off like a soulless self-hating closet case in the mold of Roy Cohn.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point - there is some humanity there. All too much, arguably. Plus, to be totally shallow, Rove is much fuglier.

[identity profile] very-improbable.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Haaaahahahahaha.

See, I instantly thought of that time you wrote Obama/Keyes. :)

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2008-02-12 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
I know.

There's a discussion upthread of why Obama/Rove is A Bridge Too Far. today at least. We'll see if I make it to the end of the election without falling any further down the rabbit hole.

Anyway, the Rude Pundit has been writing Karl Rove/Karl Rove's Leather Slave for years now...

[identity profile] very-improbable.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Those are points well made above. But more importantly, Obama and Rove have no...canonical connection to each other that would be so strong as to call for fic. That Obama/Keyes story was in a way begging to be written, even if, ah, not many people would have thought to write it.

Just wait, now that we've said that, Rove's next column in Newsweek or wherever the hell he's working now is going to be full of unintentionally suggestive commentary on the Democratic primaries...

(Roy Cohn himself was the subject of some damned interesting RPF, after all, the kind that people get paid for. But I think his character voice lends itself to much better dialogue than Rove's.)

("Was it legal? Fuck legal. Am I a nice man? Fuck nice. They say terrible things about me in The Nation? Fuck The Nation. You want to be nice or you want to be effective? You want to make the law, or be subject to it? Choose.")
