Why do I have a Tumblr now?

I have a creaky old browser and the visual sensibilities of a turnip. Nonetheless, I do! Take pity on me and add me, please!

They call it "following" over there, which is a little creepy.

stalking Following! :D

...But really, Tumblr will eat your soul. Or your time, at least. It is... very addictive.

Just what I need!

Welcome! I warn you, some of the G/O people over there are a little... intense. (you didn't hear it from me) <_<

Hear what? ;)

I'm all in favor of intensity, in general terms...

"Following" is still less creepy than "watching" people on deviantArt.

I'm on tumblr as well. http://gwenhwy.tumblr.com/

I've syndicated you:

Cool, thanks!

How does that work?

How does that work?

Not sure which part of that you're asking after, so I'll answer for both:

If you go to http://livejournal.com/syn, you can look up whether a blog that you follow elsewhere is syndicated to LJ. If it is, sign up and follow it. If it isn't, there's a box at the bottom of the page to add a new feed. I think various levels of accounts can add various numbers of new feeds; I have a permanent account, which means I'm allowed to add a fuckton of sites to the LJ syndication feed.

- or -

Every so often (daily? Multiple times a day?) the syndication thingy checks for new posts and, if there are any, imports them to LJ. Then I read them on my friends page. :)

I'm embarrassed to admit I've never actually used an RSS feed before, so I don't really know how they work. So yeah, I was asking about all of it. *blushes*

The name of the RSS feed is awesome, by the way!

I was kind of surprised it was still available, actually.

Tumblr is great for running across the most wonderful or beautiful or humorous images, and being able to quickly bounce them along to your own followers. (I've been making a lot more icons in recent months, simply due to the increase in acquisition of striking pictures.) It's terrible for holding on a conversation (because every bloody reply appears to all your followers as a separate post, whether they're interested in following the discussion or not) -- definitely keep a foothold on LJ. Also, looking into browser extensions like Missing e and Tumblr Saviour -- the latter trained me into tagging my own posts more frequently, just knowing how annoying it is for the people who follow me but aren't interested in being spammed with pictures of that one person or whatever.

Those are VERY useful tips, thank you!

It's worth pointing out that the Tumblr staff are really annoyed by Missing e in particular, and -- rather than taking the lesson about what functions its users want and adding the Missing e tweaks to Tumblr itself -- tend to periodically give a popup "warning" that Missing e has been detected and trying to scare users into uninstalling the extension, threatening that it can cause hacking and destablization and whatever else. I have not heard of any actual damage caused by Missing e -- just a lot of users very annoyed with Tumblr over it.

And, speaking of Tumblr hacks, there's one I ran across just yesterday -- the adult content popup notice that demands a login is a fake.

ETA: And I misspelled it -- it's Tumblr Savior.

Tumblr? You too? :( Why is everyone going over there? I don't even get how it works!

I'm not "going" over there in the sense of leaving - it's a terrible format for posting fic or having conversations, it's really only good for art and memes and short funny things.

I don't get how it works either, but I'm learning by doing.
