Small-towny fandom woes.

Those of you who've fandom-known me for a long time might know that [livejournal.com profile] mctabby was the one who badgered (and lioned and eagled and snaked) me to get an LJ in the first place, and that I've been an admirer of her Summary Executions for as long as she's been doing them, which is several years now.

So I was feeling a little MEAN GIRLZ this evening and went to see if Good Omens fandom could ever have such a wonderful thing.

Alas, the answer's probably no. For one thing, there are only 28 pages of fics at the Pit, and half of them are by people I know. While there are quite a few summaries that I wouldn't click on a bet, there's just very little that even comes close to the inspired WTFery of "HPLotR Xover. Flames not accepted. COMPLETE! Harry is Gandalf, Hermione is Sauron. Gandalf loves Sauron, but does Sauron love him back? Obviously not slash. Those who have been begging me to finish it, your dreams have come true! RR pwease!" or subtle trainwrecks like "Brianne, Dawn, Lily and the Mauraders have become a tight nit group." or unintentional metacommentary brought on by punctuation accidents like "Hermione and Ginny love almost nothing to do with HBP" or "Harry thinks about Christmas Mpreg." There IS a little bit of tone-deaf wangst poetry, like the sort that is the source of my icon, but...meh. I'd have to lower standards to amass enough for a proper SE: GO Edition post.

I did find this minimalist gem, though:

Crowely/Aziralphe

Yup, that's the whole summary. And it did indeed tell me everything I needed to know about the fic.

Aziralphe! It kind of has a ring to it. I like it a lot better than 'Aziraphael.' I'll keep it in mind for that AU where they're American sitcom characters.

You like me better when I shut up and write porn, don't you?

Wait a minute, you're complaining that there isn't enough badfic in your fandom? Here, you can have some of ours. We're happy to share the misery.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, there's badfic, for sure. But there's not enough of the so bad it's genius kind.

[identity profile] badmessiah.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
However, this is an improvement: when I 'joined' the fadom, if someone asked me why I thought it to be so special, my answers usually started with: "first of all, taken, say, 300 ff into account, maybe there are 2 not very good... "

[identity profile] blueeyedtigress.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Aziralphe, but we call him Ralph for short.

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!!!

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't every sitcom between the 50s and the 70s have a character named Ralph?

[identity profile] slythwolf.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
That is exactly what I was thinking. OMG. The cognitive dissonance of calling him "Ralph" is too much for my tiny tiny brain.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
If Crowley ever sees that summary, the end of the world's coming for real!

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Also, it's not "Ralph," it's "Ralphe." MUCH more elegant. XD

[identity profile] furius.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I literally cannot stop laughing over the HPLotR Xover summary..

Gandalf loves Sauron, but does Sauron love him back?

This is hysterical!

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously not slash! It can't be...if...Hermione is Sauron. *brain breaks*

I don't suppose you could provide a link to the 'Gandalf loves Sauron' fic?

Just kidding.

Running into the writers by accident is always a problem in a small fandom. Sigh.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] mctabby can!

IIRC, McT used to friendslock them, but they got too popular, and I think she finally decided 'If you didn't want be laughed at on the internet, you should put down the crack pipe and proofread." Fortunately for us, not enough people have chosen this wise course of action, for SE is at 42 installments now and going strong. And in a Pit section as nuclear-monstrously huge as HP, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

My work here is done!

Oh wait, not quite.

Pretty strait forward. Crowley's got the hots for Aziraphale and Aziraphale doesn’t notice. fun stuff some drug use some sex it’s all good. mostly thought I love the college classes. there the best. but those come later. some lang. you know M is coming.

My first thought was, who's M?

Deathfic, slash. It tastes like he knew it would.

Tortured pixels? They has a flavor? *licks screen* No, not really.

Hmm, I have an idea for you. Last year, [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction did a Badfic Summary-a-thon somewhat reminiscent of [livejournal.com profile] mctabby's Blame Someone Else fest: participants commented to the sign-up post with an invented summary worthy of execution, and then the mods mixed them up and assigned them out, and we all had two weeks, I think, to write something. There were some truly inspired stories, some purported excerpts of larger ones, some ficlets, some imitation badfic, some total crackfic - it was a lot of fun.

You can see the setup, prompts and stories: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=ds_flashfiction&keyword=Badfic+Challenge&filter=all

Maybe you should run one of these for GO?

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oooo, I loved the Blame Someone Else fest. I wrote a Harry/Remus cannibalism fic for that. And that is a sublime idea, my dear!

Harry is Gandalf, Hermione is Sauron. Gandalf loves Sauron, but does Sauron love him back?

Hmmm, for all I know this could be a heart-wrenching and cautionary tale of one young wizard's descent into hardcore hallucingen abuse (after all I can't think of anything else that would cause Harry to look at Hermione and see a big giant flaming eye - though I'm sure that the symbolism would cause 9 out of 10 psychoanalysts to raise an eyebrow).

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an eye...it's a vagina...it's a VAGINA THAT WATCHES YOU!!!! *sings* it sees you when you're sleeping / it knows when you're awake / it knows when you've been bad or good.... Oh poor, poor Harry. His Pensieve needs a 'Biohazard' sticker.

I don't even know what Summary Executions are about. From what I could read through, it was utterly confusing. Is this supposed to be quoted summaries from fics, as the writer actually wrote them? If so... wow, bad stuff.

I've seen some really old GO fics somewhere, written long before I got involved, but I'm afraid to go looking for them again. I think they might have been on a Yahoo Group or something.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. She goes through the HP section at the Pit and just copy-and-pastes summaries as she finds 'em - no editing, no comment. Pseuds redacted to protect the guilty.

Then everyone who comments snarks 'em to death, icons are made and drabbles are written and even the occasional challenge fest based on them happens, and a good time is had by all.

[identity profile] resonant8.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Aziralphe! One of the lesser-known angels, he's responsible for lawn-mowing and spilling pie on his shirt.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Bwah! And cardigans. Don't forget cardigans...

oh wait, he can't be the angel of cardigans. Aziraphale already is.
