Small-towny fandom woes.

Those of you who've fandom-known me for a long time might know that [livejournal.com profile] mctabby was the one who badgered (and lioned and eagled and snaked) me to get an LJ in the first place, and that I've been an admirer of her Summary Executions for as long as she's been doing them, which is several years now.

So I was feeling a little MEAN GIRLZ this evening and went to see if Good Omens fandom could ever have such a wonderful thing.

Alas, the answer's probably no. For one thing, there are only 28 pages of fics at the Pit, and half of them are by people I know. While there are quite a few summaries that I wouldn't click on a bet, there's just very little that even comes close to the inspired WTFery of "HPLotR Xover. Flames not accepted. COMPLETE! Harry is Gandalf, Hermione is Sauron. Gandalf loves Sauron, but does Sauron love him back? Obviously not slash. Those who have been begging me to finish it, your dreams have come true! RR pwease!" or subtle trainwrecks like "Brianne, Dawn, Lily and the Mauraders have become a tight nit group." or unintentional metacommentary brought on by punctuation accidents like "Hermione and Ginny love almost nothing to do with HBP" or "Harry thinks about Christmas Mpreg." There IS a little bit of tone-deaf wangst poetry, like the sort that is the source of my icon, but...meh. I'd have to lower standards to amass enough for a proper SE: GO Edition post.

I did find this minimalist gem, though:

Crowely/Aziralphe

Yup, that's the whole summary. And it did indeed tell me everything I needed to know about the fic.

Aziralphe! It kind of has a ring to it. I like it a lot better than 'Aziraphael.' I'll keep it in mind for that AU where they're American sitcom characters.

You like me better when I shut up and write porn, don't you?

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo has a proposal worthy of the Tempter himself!

My work here is done!

Oh wait, not quite.

Pretty strait forward. Crowley's got the hots for Aziraphale and Aziraphale doesn’t notice. fun stuff some drug use some sex it’s all good. mostly thought I love the college classes. there the best. but those come later. some lang. you know M is coming.

My first thought was, who's M?

Deathfic, slash. It tastes like he knew it would.

Tortured pixels? They has a flavor? *licks screen* No, not really.

Several thousand years of friendship was ruined in a single week, proving that love is of unknown origin. Will this story have an ending? Short moody drabble. AxC or Aziraphale X Crowley Rated simply for adult concepts and nothing more.

Nice. A drabble with that will-this-story-ever-end feeling. That's an achievement!

(Adult concepts?)

Zira and Crawl reveal their true colors literally. Very mild slash.

KILL IT WITH FIRE.

Please, he whispers, and Aziraphale seems to relenet. Can be read as some slashy bits.

I think you misspelled "rennet." 'Cause something smells like pure cheese.

A drabble with that will-this-story-ever-end feeling.

No kidding!

Zira and Crawl

AUGH. *flees, eyes bleeding*

Mwahahahah!

I know, ain't it?

I was thinking about what kind of badfic summaries reach the SE-worthy heights, and I was thinking about that LOTR Xover...see, an ordinary badficcer might think of doing that with a Dumbledore/Voldemort pairing. And it would be awful, but it would be awful in a predictable, logical way. Making it Harry/Hermione is that extra leap of genius inverted that is, dare I say it, a certain ineffability that so many other fandoms are largely lacking.

As usual, your insights are most lucid and penetrating. *bows in awe*

*grins*

Heheheh you said "penetrating." *chortles.*

Zira and Crawl
*vomits copiously, then fetches blowtorch* Those monstrosities rank right up there with "Brom" and "Raggy".

'Zira (with that apostrophe so it looks classier, I guess... but there's not one afterward for the rest of the missing name, so what's going on?) has always made my teeth grate. Crawl.... er... That's just sad.

Why on earth does EVERYONE need a damned nickname?? I don't have one, never wanted one, would probably smack the shit out of someone who tried to give me one. My mother nicknamed me into an early grave with cutesy / insulting versions of my own name. I think if I'd have to endure 'Zira, I'd have changed my name and moved faaar away.

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm reminded of Bush's habit of giving people around him insulting "cutesy" nicknames.

I've had a bunch of 'em and mostly I don't mind 'em because I thought they were funny, and they were given me by people who had no malicious intent...well, OK, I'm pushing 40 and my dad still likes to call me "Moonface" and "Peanut" in front of boyfriends. But I don't even mind that because I inherited his sense of humor and I have carte blanche to make fun of his goatee. As long as he calls my boyfriends by their own names and not the name of the previous guy, I can live with it. XD

Zira. It sounds like an air freshener, or a type of pseduo-beer marketed to sorority girls.
