the power of persuasion
Dec. 9th, 2002 02:18 pmI did get the Man-Thing to go see Blind Guardian, and a damn good thing too. We've gone through this before when there's a good metal show coming through --a surprisingly rare occurence 'round here, especially since I don't like Slipknot-style nu-metal. We went through it last year with Dio and Dimmu Borgir/Cannibal Corpse too: the coy reluctance, the pulling teeth, than the damn good time. (OK, for Motorhead/Morbid Angel he didn't need much persuasion, but that's because Lemmy is irresistible.)
He's hardly the worst of the indie snobs I have to deal with, too. Indie-rock is where I live and work, ya know, it's my neighborhood. I'm happy there. But it's not the be-all and end-all. Metal, particularly the more epic/proggish branches, gives some people such a resistance. Pure genre snobbery, IMHO. Sort of the way readers of "literary fiction" deny that what they like is itself a genre - no, genre fiction is that lowbrow escapist stuff. It's a form of aesthetic classism, really.
Gods, that BG show made me happy. Not just because the playing was great, although that certainly helped; also because metal fans are so unabashedly, proudly enthusiastic ("The Curse of Feanor" - WOOOOOOO!!!!! YAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!), which is so exciting to be in among, after being so used to the indie-club stand-with-arms-folded-and-contemplate routine.
