What is this 'eckeltricity'?
Aug. 5th, 2008 12:28 pmMuggle inventions have failed me again.
No electricity on my block, not since last night's epic storm (see Tom Skilling's awesome weather blog). I'm writing this from a cafe.
Of course, me being me, not only was I working last night in the job that meets in a windowless cinderblock room in the Loop so I MISSED IT (damn!), but I decided that however bad the damage might have been, it wasn't going to stop me from going to see the Melvins with G like I'd been planning for weeks. G. was riding his bike home from work (also in the Loop) when it hit. He said the sirens were going off all over the city, echoing off the buildings, and it was the eeriest thing he had ever heard. The wind was kicking up good-sized objects and nearly knocked him off his bike. Being a practical sort, he took refuge in a bar until it passed. We're all fine, Madimi and Digory too.
Good thing I did go to the show, because if I hadn't I would have been sitting in the dark with nothing to do even longer.
A small tree on my corner got snapped completely off like a toothpick.
