So what is this DC-Slash Con that Amedia keeps babbling about?

It's an online fan convention that welcomes all sorts of fandoms. (The "DC" in the name is for Washington, DC; this con is a continuation of the in-person ConneXions, whose last incarnation was held for several years in the DC area.) This is the same DC-Slash group that hosts the free online binges that I post about ... er, when I remember.

DC-Slash Con also welcomes people from different parts of the world and strives to provide programming for whatever time zones people are in.

It costs a whopping $15 to sign up and there are scholarships available if that's too much. This Saturday's "binge" will be a tech day for folks who would like help learning to navigate an online convention.

This is the con with pimping slides, so people can pimp their favorite fandoms - and also shows slides with the fandoms from the vid show so viewers could have a chance to recognize the new fandoms they haven't seen before.

If you have any questions, you are very welcome to ask them here!!!

The Thunder of Bison Finally Returns to the Osage Prairie

60 million American bison, commonly known as buffalo, once thundered across the prairies of North America — until 1889, when they were almost driven to extinction.

These mighty giants terraformed the land, diversified prairie ecosystems, and sustained many native tribes across the continent. Now, tribes and conservationists join forces to bring the species back from the brink, finally returning the American bison to their native grasslands.

The Osage Nation in Oklahoma, with help from allies at the Nature Conservancy and the Bronx Zoo, are reviving their cultural and spiritual connection to buffalo by rebuilding a herd that once shared their land. By reigniting traditional land management practices like prescribed fire, the Osage support the herd as it continues to grow, which in turn, restores natural balance that helps the entire prairie ecosystem thrive
.

As a keystone species, buffalo restore prairie habitat to health. They also help restore the tribal nations who depended upon them.

Cognitive collapse and the nuclear codes: When leaders lose control

A shocking study reveals that many leaders of nuclear-armed nations—including US presidents and Israeli prime ministers—were afflicted by serious health problems while in office, sometimes with their conditions hidden from the public. From dementia and depression to addiction and chronic diseases, these impairments may have affected their decision-making during pivotal global crises.

Hardly a surprise. Sanity isn't often a requirement of leadership. Venereal transmission only requires falling out of the right vagina; election only requires being popular.

Have you ever wondered how you'd handle the gold-madness of Thror? Consider that in this context. And then compare the effects of a dragon to those of a bomb.

[community profile] guardian_wishlist is returning next month, yay! It's my favourite event. It runs like [community profile] fandomtrees: people sign up with a wishlist of things they'd like to receive, and then anyone can make them gifts. One of the things I love about it is that every year I make things that would never have occurred to me otherwise: the SID Team writing RPS, Arthurian-inspired AU, tea shop AU, Zhu Hong learning martial arts, Li Qian joining the SID, etc.

I find most of my own prompts revolve, by default, around my main /-pairings, so I try to make a conscious effort to include gen and &-pairing prompts in my signups too. And (speaking not as a co-mod, but as a co-participant) I'd like to gently encourage everyone else to do the same, if they'd like to receive that kind of thing, because I love writing little gen and other-pairing things (as well as SW/ZYL), and prompts are love. :D

Invasive Species

These dogs are trained to sniff out an invasive insect—and they're shockingly good at it

Virginia Tech researchers discovered that everyday dogs can be trained to effectively sniff out destructive agricultural pests.

Dogs trained by everyday pet owners are proving to be surprisingly powerful allies in the fight against the invasive spotted lanternfly. In a groundbreaking study, citizen scientists taught their dogs to sniff out the pests’ hard-to-spot egg masses with impressive accuracy. The initiative not only taps into the huge community of recreational scent-detection dog enthusiasts, but also opens a promising new front in protecting agriculture. And it doesn’t stop there—these canine teams are now sniffing out vineyard diseases too, hinting at a whole new future of four-legged fieldwork
.

If you feel helpless against environmental threats, here's one thing you can do about it, if you're a dog lover. Dogs excel at finding things -- pretty much anything with a scent can be made interesting to a dog if you attach a reward to it.

Also, when it comes to invasive species? Never underestimate humanity's ability to destroy things.

From Meditations for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman, chapter 4:
  • As Marie Curie understood, our default stance is to measure our actual accomplishments against all the things we could, in principle, still do.

  • This is the lesson we insecure overachievers could do with getting into our skulls: actions don’t have to be things that we grind out, day after day, in order to inch ever closer to some elusive state of finally getting to qualify as adequate humans. Instead, they can just be enjoyable expressions of the fact that that’s what we already are.

Kelly Ramsey became a hotshot - the so-called Special Forces of firefighting - with three strikes against her. She's a woman on an otherwise all-male crew, a small woman dealing with equipment much too big for her, and 36 years old when most of the men are in their early 20s. If that's not enough, it's 2020 - the start of the pandemic - and California is having a record fire year, with GIGAFIRES that burn more than ONE MILLION acres. At one point her own hometown burns down.

The memoir tells the story of her two seasons with the Rowdy River Hotshots, her relationship with her awful fiance (also a firefighter, on a different crew), her relationship with her alcoholic homeless father, and a general memoir of her life. I'd say about three-fifths of the book is about the hotshots, and two-fifths are her fiance/her father/her life up to that point.

You will be unsurprised to hear that I was WAY more interested in the hotshots than in her personal life. The fiance was loosely relevant to her time with the hotshots (he was jealous of both the male hotshots and of her job itself), and her alcoholic father and her history of impulsive sexual relationships was relevant to her personality, but you could have cut all of that by about 75% and still gotten the point.

All the firefighting material is really interesting, and Ramsey does an impressively good job of not only vividly depicting hotshot culture, but also differentiating 19 male firefighters. I had a good idea of what all of them were like and knew who she meant whenever she mentioned one, and that is not easy. You get a very good idea of both the technique and sheer physical effort it takes to fight fires, along with plenty of info on fire behavior and the history of fire in California. (She does not neglect either climate change or the indigenous use of fire.)

This feels like an incredibly honest book. Ramsey doesn't gloss over how gross and embarrassing things get when no one's bathed for weeks, you've been slogging through powdery ash the whole time, there's no toilets, and you're the only one who menstruates. She depicts not only the struggle of trying to keep up with a bunch of younger, stronger, macho guys, but how desperate she is to be accepted by them as one of the guys and how this causes problems when another woman joins the crew - a woman who openly points out that flawed men are welcomed while every mistake she makes is taken as a sign that women can't do the job.

I caught myself wishing that Ramsey hadn't had an affair with one of her crew mates as many readers will think "Yep, that's what happens when women get on crews," and then realizing that I hadn't thought that about the man who had the affair with her. Even I blamed Ramsey and not the equally culpable dude!

Ramsey reminded me at times of Amy Dunn's vicious description of the "cool girl" in Gone Girl, but to her credit, she's aware that this is a persona she adopted to please men and fill the void left by her alcoholic dad. Thankfully, there's a lot more to the book than that.

Challenge #5

Journaling prompt: Be a carnival barker for your favorite movie, book, or show! Write a post that showcases the best your chosen title has to offer and entices passersby to check it out.

This one isn't a favourite per se, but I did recently watch and enjoy it, it's Sherlock & Daughter.

Title: Sherlock & Daughter

Media: Television series

Approx length: 8 episodes, approx 8 hours

Where to find it: CW/HBO Max

What is it, in summary?: A young woman from the US named Amelia arrives at 221B claiming to be Sherlock Holmes' daughter.  Holmes doubts this claim.  At the same time Holmes is in a terrible bind, his dear friends Doctor Watson and Mrs Hudson have been kidnapped, and if he wants them to remain alive the kidnappers have said he is not to investigate any crimes.  He takes Amelia on as his maid/assistant and she goes out into the world collecting clues and information so Holmes can make deductions and appear uninvolved.

What do you love about it?: First off I wanted to say if you are looking for a book accurate Sherlock Holmes adaptation this is not the show for you, I would instead suggest the Granada series which I talk about here.  This show runs more on Holmes style vibes than anything else, plus this is supposed take place several years after the events of the books.  It is also a very "CW" version of Sherlock Holmes, by which I mean there was a lot of focus on the young characters, in this case Amelia, who I did like, lots of drama and action.  I'm probably not explaining it well, but if you've watched CW shows from the past you get their style and vibe.

Anyways, with all the caveats aside, I did enjoy this for what it was, and I found the overarching mystery interesting enough as they tried to figure out how Watson and Mrs Hudson's kidnapping was connected to other crimes.  Also, the characters were likeable, I did like the actor who played Holmes, he's not my fave by any means, no one will probably ever top Brett for me, but I still enjoyed his take on Holmes.

As of right now, the CW has not renewed the show, however, I will say the main overarching storyline of the season is wrapped up by the end.  There were a couple of minor plotlines left open for the possibility of a second season, but you can enjoy the one season as a complete story.

Content warnings: There is murder and violence, I say fairly typical of murder mysteries.  There is a scene where a very minor character commits suicide.

Who do I ship?: Holmes/Watson. Watson is barely in the season and I still ship them!  There are a few small moments throughout the season where you can tell that Holmes is thinking about Watson and they just tug at my heart.  There is a scene at the end of the first episode where Holmes says to himself "My dear Watson, where are you?"  then looks longingly at Watson's medical bag on his desk.  Like come on!  I tried to find a gif of it, but tumblr for once has failed me :( (if I find a gif after I will place it here).

There is also some fun tension between Holmes and a certain villain character that piqued my interest.

Birdfeeding

Today is mostly sunny, humid, and hot. It rained copiously yesterday.

The internet serviceman came out today and installed some new equipment, which will hopefully fix the problems we've been having. We went outside to look at that. The antenna is now atop the bathroom roof, much higher and pointing south instead of east, so we have a better signal already.

My partner Doug had already started bushwhacking a path to the east edge of the yard, where the old antenna pointed. We still want to finish that for the sake of edge access. It didn't get mowed last year. We expected it to be full of weeds. We did not expect it to be full of 10-12' high hackberry and walnut saplings that obviously show multiple years of growth. :/ I strongly suspect that they waded into that position. I told them very firmly to move it or lose it, because we are serious about restoring that path.

I have not yet fed the birds. I have seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a mourning dove at the feeders. A cardinal was trying to get through the living room window, so I had to shut my office door to block the false flyway between the south living room window and the north office window.

I fed the birds.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/17/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/17/25 -- I planted 2 wild senna, one under the contorta willow and one under the apricot tree. The ones in the wildflower garden are blooming. :D I sowed seeds of apricot, white peach, and cherry plum. The latter look like beach plums to me -- they're smaller than apricots -- and we got a whole carton of them. It will be interesting to see if they sprout.

I've been hearing thunder.

EDIT 7/17/25 -- I took some pictures around the yard.

EDIT 7/17/25 -- I refilled the birdfeeders.

EDIT 7/17/25 -- I potted up 3 apples fallen from the birdgift tree.

I've heard a red-winged blackbird and a house wren, but didn't see them.

Cicadas are singing. Fireflies are coming out.

For Fandom In Color we’re spotlighting Nile Freeman.

Nile is a newly created immortal, who is our POV character for the secret mercenary group known as The Old Guard. Played by KiKi Layne in the film adaptations, she is a well liked character in the fandom, with many fans exploring her struggles around becoming an immortal, and having to leave her family behind, in fanworks. However, there has also been some discourse around treating Nile as an adult instead of a “baby” in the group of immortals.

Since the release of the second film her Fanlore page could use some updating. Can you help us with that?

Moontime

Moontime began in the early hours of today at around 3 a.m.

I tried a new pair of period underwear that miraculously didn't leak at the sides despite having regular seams, not bonded seams: Nushu's Hiphugger. It's bamboo underwear with a modal gusset. I wore it for around five to six hours even though my flow was heavy, and it held up. Blood got on the trims but didn't soak through them to the other side, which is a first. I like bonded period underwear (sometimes called seamless period underwear) but their gussets are quite stiff and they can feel like you're sitting on cardboard. Also, most of them are nylon/polyester even in the body fabric.

I'm happy I found a pair that has regular seams, is soft and comfy, and still doesn't leak. It's rare that I change period underwear just because it feels full and wet, not because it leaked at the seams or got stained at the trims. I wore another underwear after changing out of this one, and it leaked at the seams/side trims, confirming that somehow this one is special.

There aren't really any offers running at the moment (I checked Meta Ads Library and there are ads that just have a coupon code for 10% off your first purchase), but you get 400 rupees off on the purchase of three products. When I saw that the Hiphugger is sold out in all sizes except my size, I thought I'd better stock up.

I'm still wondering how it works, though. Did they extend the waterproof fabric into the seams, not just the gusset? Like, how's it different from my other seamed period underwear? What's the secret here?

Perihelion's people notice it's been acting strangely since it returned from its last solo mission. A short story set after Artificial Condition.

My favorite thing about this series is Murderbot and ART and their favorite humans. My least favorite thing is all the descriptions of walking around. This has both. I would have liked it a lot better if it had spent half as much time describing the path they took through the spaceport facility and twice as much time exploring Iris and Peri's relationship because that's the important stuff, right? I wanted to learn more about their relationship and the ways Peri changed after meeting Murderbot and what Iris thinks about those changes. Here I was thinking ART was always like this, but it seems Murderbot might have had more of an effect on ART then it could have known.

Instead: Transit schedules. :(
