Seriously, it's a real downer - all bloody and nasty and shit. And it's too long and tries to cram too much history into one movie. But it's definitely worth seeing for several factors: (1)Daniel Day-Lewis's character and performance, which would've been a Best Actor Oscar shoo-in any year that didn't also have Adrien Brody carrying a whole Holocaust movie on his shoulders alone; (2) The sets and costumes and rich sense of place and time and character; and (3) Scorsese's wry sense of political commentary (Boss Tweed saying, "It's not the ballots that decide the election, it's the counters, so get counting!").
