First off, neighbors: I was out of the country last year and I forgot how annoying you are. I'll never forget again.

And that, in a nutshell, is a good part of the reason why my country is crazy. Because the best of us are paralyzed by the tension between the individual and the collective and striking the right balance, while the worst of us--who care about neither--just swing a big club indiscriminately.

It's time to think a lot more on that "consent of the governed" thing.
