...here we go, for real.

For non-Americans: Tonight is a big night in the demented reality show that is US Politics.

The Presidential election has BEGUN.

What? You thought it's already been going on for over a year? You're already sick of hearing about it?

Well, you're right. The primary season began around December of 2006. This is how long it's taken just to determine who the two final candidates (one for each major party) are. These were just the qualifying rounds, in other words.

John McCain (R-Bat Country) has been the presumptive Republican nominee for some months now. (He's another crusty old war-mongering white guy straight out of Central Casting. You've seen him before.)

The Democrats have been locked in a Thunderdome cage match between the first truly viable female Presidential candidate in our history, and the first truly viable African-American one. No matter who wins, somebody loses, and yet history is made regardless, which is both a win-win and a lose-lose situation, which is why it's a good thing that we're the only party capable of negative capability. (It's also why we historically have a gift for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The general election public "doesn't do nuance.")

Tonight, the last chips in our absurdly complicated nominating process fell into place, and they fell on the side of Senator Barack Obama (D-RIGHT HERE WHERE I LIVE, BABY), who is walking charisma machine. (Seriously - a crowd of 75,000 in a PRIMARY? Who the fuck does that? Nobody. Nobody but Barack Obama, that is.)

Some of my dear friends are supporters of Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) so I'm not going to say anything really mean about her. But I do have to say, there's been either a Bush or a Clinton in or near the White House as POTUS or VP since I was frakkin' ELEVEN YEARS OLD, and I'm turning 40 next year. We're not supposed to have royal families. I also have to say, whenever I've heard Obama speak, my gut and heart have been telling me for YEARS that he's the one.
