vulgarweed: (blake_liberty_by_hawk_moon267)
I had an exchange with an LJ friend (who locked her post so I won't link to it), who was struggling with the issue of how to express visceral revulsion with right-wing politics, while still remaining on good terms with friends and family who may hold those beliefs.

I have this problem too. I even have it with my boss at one of my jobs (we get around it by disguising our soul-deep convictions in the form of snarky banter--which, IMO, is underrated as one of the Great Healing Forces of the Universe.)

But on LJ, I'm coming out with what I really feel.

Please read this article about Sarah Palin and her religious and political connections.

[livejournal.com profile] dogemperor is a Religious Right walkaway who's devoted years to researching and exposing the influence of Dominionist theology on American politics.

What this has to do with me and you: I am bi-ethnic, bi-national, and bisexual. I am a leftist, a polytheist Pagan witch, and a pro-choice feminist. I am all in favor of any consenting adults having any kind of mutually fulfilling relationships they damn well please, and if they pay taxes and vote, they should get equal protection under the law like the Constitution says. I don't think the military is inherently honorable, and if war is unnecessary I think it's inherently dishonorable. I think children NEED to learn about both evolution and birth control, and if their parents won't do it, someone else damn well better. I don't think there is anything at all special about the United States on a spiritual level. I think good ethics come from empathy with others, not any religious book. I think any "god" who'd condemn anyone to eternal torment for guessing wrong is not worthy of worship. I am not the least bit apologetic or repentant about any of these things and I will not convert at gunpoint.

Palin's in bed with people who long for literal cultural war.

So if you're reading this, and you enjoy my fic, or you like my commentary on sundry topics and think you'd like to hang out with me sometime even though you might disagree with me on some things, awesome. That's totally cool. I'm all for civil disagreement and respectful exchange of dissenting ideas (that's a liberal value, you know - by definition, look it up in the dictionary).

But please don't vote for someone who wants me dead. I'm sorry but I do take that personally.
