*sigh*

No, I'm not going to summarize the whole thing - [livejournal.com profile] metafandom has some excellent links that talk about the issues here, as do some of the smarter comments in the LJ biz thread. I can't be bothered.

I won't be flagging my journal, though. I wouldn't even have noticed that anything was unusual if I hadn't happened to look at my friends page while not logged in accidentally, and wow, those cuts are FUGLY and insulting.

Different people use their journals for different things. For some people, it's primarily a personal diary. For others, it's primarily a fic archive or political soapbox or newsletter. All of these are fine.

Me, I look at mine like I'm hosting a salon or holding court in a cafe. I might set the random topic-of-the-hour, but tangents are encouraged and so are strangers. Anybody who surfs in from friends-of-friends-of or what have you is welcome to comment--that's how I've found half the journals I enjoy reading most now! I don't view my larger 'friendslist' as really meaning "bosom buddies I trust with everything." It's a list of Journals I Like to Read. Some are bosom buddies, and some are random people who said nice things about my fic three years ago and are groovy, and some are random people whose fic I liked three years ago and are still groovy, and some are people I wish would talk to me more and some are people I don't really need to have conversation with, I just like what they do. If I need to talk about personal stuff, I'll smaller-filter it, but that's not the main point of LJing for me.

I doubt there are many severely underage people reading this (and if there are, my policy is "don't ask, don't tell"), and even my (nowhere near the majority of my journal, not as prolific as I'd like) pr0n content is not anything I think is "damaging" to "minors." My favorite writer when I was 15 was Henry Miller, for fuck's sake. If you can buy his stuff at Borders with no hassle (which you can, and Burroughs and De Sade besides!) you can certainly read my relatively tame witch/wizard and angel/demon smut.

Attracting random folks from the aether (self-selected from within the larger fandom social substrate, of course) to interact with is the reason I have this journal in the first place! I won't be doing anything to make it less hospitable. If circumstances dictate I have to, I'll just work harder at moving everything over to IJ; the main reason I haven't yet is that, well, there aren't enough people there.

Blargh. Again. Does that mean we're not safe just by putting our entire ST comm on "Members Only"? If we "flag" everything, does that automatically exclude anyone who's lied about their ages? What the hell else can they do to us...

I was trying to make all my entries links back to other journals, but people were ignoring my posts a bit more than usual. I backslid a little because of that, but this new annoyance will probably make me work harder at that.

Actually, if we were to put ST under 'Adult Content' I think it would screen underage members for us, and we wouldn't have to anymore. That'd be nice. That's the only useful thing I can see about all this, really.

I'm not going to hide anything that's just mine, though. And I'm going to keep using LJ until I can't anymore, because that's where most of the people are. But I do want to work on trying to make my other journals interesting and attractive some more in case I need to make a complete transition someday.

Meaning you think we'd best change the setting on ST before someone gets all 'flaggy' on us?

Geez, I dunno. I'm not good at making decisions like this. Can't imagine who'd get flaggy - I don't know how much clearer we can make it that HERE BE PR0N. (Not that flagging seems to lead to any real consequences that I can see.)

Hee, I personally agree :) But I'm also the paranoid type, as you know. Thus the "Friends Only" move when Strikethrough started. I think better safe than sorry... though I also don't think "safe" is a real option anymore.

I think I'm gonna Flag ST anyway...

Check your LJ Settings page -- they put the default search settings to 'filter adult content' for us. How helpful. -__-

Already did - got the headsup on that, thanks. I fixed it to whatever the highest perv level is.

GOD, 6A wants to make another Myspace so bad, don't they? Pathetic!

That would just make me leave for sure. It's a pity, it really is. Too bad LJ's creator had to grab the $$ and run.

They sure do - and they seem completely oblivious to the reality that their core userbase are people who by and large are over 18 and who can't stand MySpace (that's why they're on LJ). I'm afraid that in their futile quest to turn LJ into an ad-driven cash cow, they're going to kill it. Even the most devoted Permanent Users have to have their limits!

IJ just looks better and better, doesn't it? :) Doesn't matter to me where you post it, as long as I can read it... despite the fact that I've been uber-busy w/ work and school this semester and haven't been reading as much as I'd like...
