Jingle, Jingle, my heathen arse!

Getting grief from the parents about visiting....which I really certainly want to do. I love my parents as people, I enjoy their company, and I even love their remote, forested land on a hidden dirt road in the Appalachian Mountains now that I no longer have to live there.
But travel, right now, with holiday frenzy, lack of cash, the Man-Critter's new (retail!) job....uh, uh, don't think so...not until AFTER the holidays, thank you. Well, that's a nice thing about having been raised in the woods by atheists - they don't give a damn if you hit the exact holiday dates or not. Just so long as you fit some family time and some loot-exchange somewhere in roughly around there, within a month or two in either direction.
And in other news, I seem to be the only person I know IRL who's geeked about Gangs of New York, really wants to see it, and is desperately hoping it's good. That's because I'm kind of a history nerd, particularly an urban history nerd, and I've devoured so much about this period, like the book the movie's loosely based on, and Luc Sante's Low Life and Edwin Burrows & Mike Wallace's Manhattan-phone-book sized Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898, and spent so much time worshipping this website....well, squee, OK, just squee, even if I do find Leo diCaprio tedious and implausible in every period movie I've endured him in. I mean, it's Scorsese, there's a chance it could be good, right?
Still chuckling at the people who are acting shocked, shocked, at the revelation that Trent Lott is a racist.

Date: 2002-12-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(I was amused to see the movie has the Requisite Dancing-At-A-Party scene that Hollywood has decreed all movies about Irish immigrants,or Irish people in general, must include. I can just imagine someone viewing the rough cut and saying "You know what it needs? Some dancing! Those Irish were poor, but they were happy! They danced their Irish asses off every chance they got!" LOL)
Ah yes...

Date: 2002-12-13 12:18 am (UTC)I can ignore DeCaprio for a good story and better actors, I did it with Man in the Iron Mask I can most assuredly do it for this.
If you get a chance see the take the Daily Show did on Lott, I was laughing at loud.
This picture of Thurmond with balloons and ribbons and a huge caption that said "Even racists have birthdays!"

Date: 2002-12-13 01:06 pm (UTC)Until I read to the bottom of the post, I was going to ask you about the books you mentioned. You had mentioned them a while back when we were talking about "Winter's Tale" on the groups. I'll have to pick them up, I've been wanting to read them.
So, I see your squee and raise you a yippee...
