Surreal is your mom calling you up at 2:45 AM from a bus somewhere en route to Kuala Lumpur asking you to log onto her email account and change her password lest the nosy friend she was staying with before read all her email. She won't have time, as she's flying to Jakarta as soon as she arrives.

Well? It's a perfectly civilized hour where she is, after all!

(Not as bad as it sounds. I am still awake then more often than not, and she knows it.)

Heh. Well, when I had that 16-hour flight last spring it sure seemed big. :)

She is frantically busy, which is just how she likes it best. It's not a vacation - she doesn't understand the concept. :)

well now, i didn't think to ask, but knowing her, probably. :) hopefully it's not going to be illness she brings back, but then again she was fine after Cambodia, which included some more rough-n-ready adventures around Angkor Wat. she's probably going to be spending most of her time in the conference hotel--i don't know that she's even going to be there a full week. i'm just jazzed she's got this opportunity, and she is too. she seems a little surprised by it, truly.

It was. Just a little. At least partly because it didn't really seem abnormal at all until I thought about it afterward.

She and her sister travel together every year or two, just for fun (they're both semiretired at this point). They've been to various places ranging from Greece to the UK to Uzbekistan to Italy, and this year it's China. *g* Power to them!

That? Is fucking cool. Good for them! Uzbekistan?!? Mom and I would both love to go there - we're both obsessed with the music and the history of that region so much. But isn't it...well, kind of a scary dictatorship? I do think about the politics of it, and I worry sometimes.

Cross fingers for us - the trip Mr. Weed and I are trying to save up for involves Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and maybe Algeria and Tunisia.

Yeah, Uzbekistan. But they went there, um, like 7 or 8 years ago now, before the political situation was quite so unraveled. They really enjoyed it although I think it was a bit rigorous.

I've been in Spain, once, 21 years ago now [EEK!] and it was fun; never been to the other places you're talking about, but I bet you'll have a grand time!

We want to sail across at Gibraltar, I know that. And I have always wanted to see Morocco. And spend a night in a tent on the Sahara. (We also hope to have Mom with us, as she is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and can pass in French.)

it's also surreal, in a perfectly delightful way, to get a myspace message from your best friend asking you to reply with your phone numbers because the only record of said numbers and other contact info was in the cellphone that he lost the night before--
