Purge-related PSA: Be VERY careful if you go to the Warriors of Idiocy site: it's been widely reported now that the site loads you up with spyware.

These charming folks have now attracted the notice of [livejournal.com profile] dark_christian, the Dominionist/theocrat watch group on LJ, and one of the most informative posters there, [livejournal.com profile] dogemperor, has a post here about some very unsavory connections this group may have. (But the Confederate flag and homophobic and racist rants on the WoI individual's personal blog don't take much detective work, they're out there for all to see. Looks like it gets even worse).

As for general LJ-fandom related things, [livejournal.com profile] ms_katonic has a terrific roundup of links here.

There is the community [livejournal.com profile] innocence_jihad on LJ, and fandomtossed on GJ. (I'm vulgarweed over there too - friend me!)

Now I'm working on a post about the importance of alternative archives. Coming soon. What are your favorite archives? (Multifandom, your fandom, etcs.)

Thanks for the heads up, although I certainly wasn't planning to go anywhere near the Warriors of Idiocy site. Exposure to that much concentrated stupidity would surely fry my poor laptop's motherboard!

You're not missing much by going there. (I did, but I am also now experiencing one of the few perks of using a seriously outdated Mac browser.)

I had a rummage round there, but firefox and noscript seem to have kept me safe... was interesting though. Some of the stuff that they were suggesting - about how to be a perpetrator barrier - well, I'm fairly sure it would get you prosecuted here for encouraging / soliciting child porn which is ironic as that's what they think we're doing.

Erm, dunno what US law is like, but I'd be very tempted to report to them to the police.

A few posters have commented in a few places about how much legitimate law enforcement HATES this kind of vigilante, because it makes their job--that of tracking real predators and BUSTING them--so much harder.

Some charmer over here did something similar - though it seemed to be more that they backed out of something at the last minute - and reported a series of conversations he'd been having in chat with others about abducting and raping a little girl.

He got life, same as the rest of the perpetrators.

Oh, clot!

I've been optimistic for two days, believing that the stupid cannot possibly win, even hoping that the suspended accounts would get renewed with an apology. I'm rosy like that, sometimes. Then I read the cnet article. Am now too stunned to think, so I'm just waiting for an official word from LJ staff.

LOTS of people are waiting for that. I'm an eternal optimist, still holding out hope for at least some dust to settle. But I'm also serious about promoting other archives and networking sites...it's not smart to have all our eggs in one basket.

Pish. I visited there yesterday, but a spyware sweep didn't turn up anything so maybe Firefox saved my bacon.

That's good. Unfortunately, there's no software yet that can wholly protect you from bad vibes and creepy cooties.

Cleaned our computer today, but there's no telling what (if anything) might have come from visiting that site. Regardless, I think there are more than enough other people doing the visiting that I can hide 'til it (plz gods) blows over.

Good to clean up regularly anyhow.

Hah! Calico Jack Rackham! (PotC3 has got me on a pirate flag research and design kick.)

Come to think of it, a good friend of mine uses the .SIG file "Proud to be a textual poacher!" in reference to her fanfic. Maybe we're all modern pirates, sailing the seas of literature ... ;]

"Yo-ho, haul together, raise the colours high!
Heave-ho, theives and beggars, never say we die!"

Made by [livejournal.com profile] roaring at [livejournal.com profile] innocence_jihad probably about the same time you posted that.

Isn't fandom's shared brain wonderful?

I'd taken a look yesterday, but ran my AV scan and I seem to be clean. *crosses fingers* Not intending to go back.

Uh... my favorite archive is my own site. Which, yeah, I suppose someone could conceivably contact the web host to complain about adult content, but I'm not terribly concerned about that (it's the same host that HASA uses).

Skyehawke is decent enough, though there are certain restrictions re: content (that Australia under-17 thing). Except for fanfiction.net that's the only big multifandom archive I really use (and ff.net I only use in a very limited way).

If there were someplace that took everything, and where I could be assured that the rules wouldn't change and things wouldn't be yanked or canceled without warning, I'd love to know about it.

Thinking, what a whole lot of this boils down to is that people don't like to mind their own business. If I'm not doing anything that causes actual physical harm to another person, IMO there is no reason for it to be considered illegal; if someone doesn't like what I write, they don't have to look at it.

Ah, your own site. That's the best refuge of course.

I'm hearing good things about The Archive at the End of the Universe: http://www.the-archive.net/index.php I just got an invite, but it's being a little glitchy for me. I'll report back.

Date: 2007-05-31 02:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] celandineb.livejournal.com
Will be interested in hearing how that one is. It's like Skyehawke in being invite-by-current-member only, right?

Date: 2007-05-31 02:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com
Yup. And if I ever get over this glitch, you're in if you want to be. :)

Hey, did you figure out the glitch? *bats eyelashes* 'Cause I think I would like to archive there...

Date: 2007-06-01 07:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com
Yes! They fixed it for me last night - but then LJ wouldn't let me post!

What username would you like, and where shall the invite be sent?

Date: 2007-06-01 08:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] celandineb.livejournal.com
Username: Celandine [capitalized], and you can send the invite to celandine AT wellinghall DOT net; presumably it should be to the addy I'd want registered, so that would be it. Thanks ever so! *G*

Man, this gets scarier by the hour. I guess I should get a greatestjournal account just in case. >.< Bleh.

Honestly, every time you think you've got some little corner of the net to occupy without being bugged someone comes over and gets all holier-than-thou on you. *growls* A friend and I have been sending emails to mods of fanfic comms who don't seem to have heard the news to make sure they edit their interests. So far people have been doing well with the heads up.

Thank Adam that GO has the GO library. I'm not very informed about other archives other than skyhawke and the Pit, so I'll be glad for an information post of that nature. ;)

Do get a GJ account, and friend me (I'm vulgarweed over there too). Nice place, but relatively empty compared to LJ. We can fix that, though. :)

If you join [livejournal.com profile] innocence_jihad there's a scary amount of new information unrolling all the time - seems to be the best sort of clearinghouse.

I think SOMEONE is a little behind in uploading things to GOL, isn't she missy? :P

I have to say though, I'm all impressed with the icons and banners coming out of this to spread word, and how fandom has collectively chosen the POTC3 theme as our fight song. XD

I think GJ will be my first stop tomorrow morning. Tomorrow is laundry day, so there will be plenty of time....

*ducks head guiltily* And that will be stop #2 tomorrow. >.> *whistles innocently*

Well, I suppose you don't want ff.net, though I'm still using it. No NC-17 allowed there anyway ...

http://www.nfiction.com/ This one appears to be a clone of an older version of ff.net. Comfortably easy to use. Or maybe that's just because I was already used to it from ff.net.

http://www.skyehawke.com/archive/ ... I think someone already mentioned this one.

http://www.transformersfanfic.com/ The only fandom specific site I post at. Transformers fandom, so I doubt you'll have much use for it.
