The Shameless Whoring for Gift Fic/Art post.
This has become a meme now, and I’ve been nudged into writing one of these by
resonant8 and
bethbethbeth, who both link theirs in their userinfo. The idea is that those seeking to write gift fic or draw gift art might do better with a clue to my likes and dislikes. So should anyone reading this be inclined to gift me at any point (my birthday’s July 6) here’s some things to know. (But these are…really more like guidelines.) I realize this post is mostly fic-geared, but I love art too, and some of it should apply at least.
None of this, particularly references to things I dislike, is meant as a slam on any writer/artist or meant to be any implication that such things should not exist or can't be good stories or what have you. This is just, well, all about me.
Smut:
Slash, het, femslash, it’s all good.
Kinks: Exotic settings. Sex that’s a little clumsy or difficult or requires negotiation in some way. Threesomes. Dirty talk, particularly from someone unexpected. Power struggles, a bit of a D/s dynamic where the roles are not taken for granted. Hints of danger. Erotic uses of magical or supernatural powers. Voyeurism and exhibitionism fitting together nicely. Roleplaying, costumes; half-clothed sex, urgency (wallsex! Floorsex! Alleysex!). Humor, banter, verbal challenges. Competition. Someone getting their limits pushed and loving it. Someone being seduced by the exact “wrong” person and loving it. Genderfuck. BDSM themes: a little biting, a little bondage, a little violence, a little servitude, all in the service of pleasure ultimately. (Unless it’s those Tolkien baddies, in which case it might be a lot of violence…) For that matter, full-on BDSM is truly awesome in the hands of a writer who knows the subject well.
Squicks: There aren’t many sexual acts per se that squick me, and the ones I can think of are really rare anyway. General things that turn me off on the whole (there are always exceptions) are infantilization/extreme dependency, especially the emotional kind; inexperience as a sort of fetish (particularly female virginity); rigid sexual roles or power imbalances with no potential for a stunning upset (unless that’s truly IC – see those Tolkien villains again); too much sappy domesticity. Parent-child incest (sibs are OK, because I don’t have any!). It could probably go without saying that anything involving prepubescents is gross. Oh, and you may have noticed in my own smut I never use clinical words like “penis” or “anus” or “vagina.” That’s not accidental.
***
Lower-rated romance/gen:
No! It does NOT have to be smut to make me happy.
Loves: Humor – make me laugh and you’re halfway into mypants heart. Adventure. Intrigue. Mystery. Mysticism. Social commentary. Atmosphere. Exotic settings and weird AUs. Historical stories and futurefic. Crossovers. Stories-within-stories.
Not so much: Angst for angst’s sake, deathfic, babyfic.
***
Fandoms, Characters, Pairings: It just occurred to me that, duh, I don’t have to list just the fandoms I’m actually active in myself. But those are:
Good Omens:
I didn’t really know what it felt like to have an OTP until Aziraphale and Crowley came along, (probably because I tended to write rare/odd pairings and minor characters in cast-of-thousands fandoms). LOVE them, madly. I may well define OTP differently than some, though---I would never expect strict monogamy from immortals. I also love pairings and ideas no one, or hardly anyone, has done yet. Humor and weird theology come standard with this fandom. Anything that really delves into and plays with metaphysical/religious ideas especially welcome.
Harry Potter:
Now, this is a really wide-open free-range sort of thing. Snape/Almost Anyone is always good. That’s where I started and kind of where I’ve stayed. I also like Luna/Almost Anyone, Shacklebolt/Almost Anyone, McGonagall/Anyone Interesting, and well-done Riddlesmut. I have no vested interest in any of the Trio-related shipping wars, but I love Triosmut like WHOA. I like post-Hogwarts stories, and espionage tales, and magic geekery. I like my Snape rude and greasy. I like Hermione’s ruthlessness. I like Lupin’s passive-aggressiveness. Dumbledore is a manipulative bastard, and I love him for it. No Ron or Hagrid bashing please.
Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion
As-good-as-canon pairings: Frodo/Sam and Legolas/Gimli. (Legolas bores me with anyone else). I like kinky manly smut involving the Sons of Gondor or the Rohirrim—and Éowyn can count as “manly.” And of course I walk on the dark side and love the hell out of Melkor/Sauron, Melkor/Fëanor, Sauron/Witch-King, and the like, and I am always up for encouraging the writing of more of that, or anything about those characters, really. (Thuringwethil!) As far as gen goes, my favorite characters are the ones we know least about, or have fascinating histories hinted at but never fleshed out: Tom Bombadil. Goldberry. The Ents and the Entwives. Dwarves. The river hobbits Sméagol came from. The ancient Kings. The Nazgûl. The Valar. The other Istari besides Gandalf and Saruman (though stories about them are great too) – Radagast! The Easterlings. The Haradrim…it goes on and on.
US Politics RPS…
Those who know what I like….know what I like. I am amenable to shakeups as well. ;)
Fandoms I don’t write in but will gladly read:
Star Wars
Episodes IV-VI still hold first place in my heart. Anything goes. (Why isn’t there more Han/Lando?) From the prequel trilogy, I like Obi-wan and Crackfic!Anakin. Jedi fic. The intergalactic underworld.
Lost
My favorite characters are Sayid, Locke, Mr. Eko, and Danielle. I don’t know what this says about me.
His Dark Materials
Anything goes here.
Discworld
Ditto. One of the very few fandoms where I can get excited about Deathfic! (Sandman is another.)
Gormenghast
Aw, who doesn’t love/hate Steerpike? Titus needs more love (literally!). So does Flay. And Prunesquallor.
Anything H.P.Lovecraft
The creepier the better, though my favorite book is actually The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Anything that gets close to that feel is awesome!
Hellblazer
John Constantine is a blond Englishman. I’m pretty inflexible on that one, sorry. As long as we’ve established that, anything goes.
The Daily Show
RPS, sorta, but these guys are so “fictional.” And yes, I have written it, but those muses seem long gone, alas. Doesn’t mean I don’t still love to read it.
The occasional bit of musician slash
Not a frequent occurrence around here, but then there was that one very long and kinky Lou Reed/John Cale thing I read…wow. I certainly wouldn’t kick a good Page/Plant or Cave/Bargeld or young!Ferry/Eno out of bed for eating crackers, for example.
Original fic
Your call, obviously. Go for it!
