Yeah, I've been lying low. It's been a bumpy week emotionally but I think I'm levelling out.
Also just realized how far behind I've fallen in getting stories up at archives (six months for Skyehawke). Going to have to space it out -- spamming the whole "Latest" page is obnoxious.
Because Lord knows I can't think of anything significant while waiting for Brazil's match to start. Looking at my Skyehawke list, I realize sometimes I don't understand my own reasons for rating things the way I do. I generally tend to "round up" just to be safe, but at Skyehawke, I actually assign an R rating to lots of things I called NC-17 on LJ. Maybe it's the "culture" of the archive - I've read a lot of pretty explicit things there that wore an R just fine. Maybe it's the way the X rating is described with that "violence/sex" thing makes me want to save it for things that are, as the young sports kids say, Xtreme. Which I really don't think I write all that often.
Some obvious X's are "The Ring and the Crown," which is the bloodiest and grimmest thing I've ever written, "All That's Best of Dark and Bright," which has rather violent and blasphemous hate-sex that has a powerful psychic effect on an innocent, uninvolved party, and "Charmed" has both incest and bestiality, so...
But why "30 Minutes Over Kandahar," which...oh yeah, bestiality. (Sort of--she's an Animagus so the consent/animal abuse issues of the "real thing" are irrelevant). Mere interspecies relations aren't the same thing to me, no matter how un-humanoid, otherwise I'd have given an X to "By Root and Twig" which is both a threesome and a very-alien-species encounter. Yet it's friendly sex--no harm, no angst--and it's not all that graphic by my standards, I don't think, so...R it is. "The Circular Argument"--also a threesome, also friendly--got an R as well. And boy, did I dither over "Compromising Positions." Again, you know, friendly, nothing particularly squicky...well, unless you're squicked by promiscuity, sex-slave role-playing, bondage, a little D/s gamesmanship, and public sex, which I gather some folks are (it even has a bestiality joke--no, I'm not obsessed with it, really!)...and yet, frankly the sex scene is such a proportionally small part of the story I slapped its butt and sent it on its way with an R and a warning.
Next: I angst over copious drug use in the otherwise innocuous Little, Big fic, "The Bird-Loud Street."
And of course...
England. Oh, England. Ouch. I'm sorry.
Now we find out if we'll have an all-Portuguese-speaking semifinal....*twitches nervously*
