Fellow Americans: if you're shocked by this, you're either very naive or very young. I wasn't alive for the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, or Malcolm X but I grew up hearing all about them from my parents, to whom they were very fresh--and I was alive to remember the attempts on Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan. And let's not even get started on hate crimes that don't make national headlines because the victims aren't famous.
Non-Americans: Sadly, this is no shock to me. We really are full of nooks and crannies of hate and violence, and no one who's aware and politically involved takes life for granted here.
