Today is the 10th anniversary of this Livejournal!

Here's what I posted on November 23rd, 2002:

It's a Brand-New Day! Well, no, it's not, it's late afternoon. It starts getting dark at 4 PM here this time of year. But here I am, new to the Live Journal game. I'd very much like to thank McTabby, Resmiranda, Alchemine, Tinderblast, and everyone who's pitched in to help me out with this. I thank them in advance for all the dumb newbie questions I'll be peppering them with in the weeks to come.

Anyway, Mission of Burma were astoundingly good last night. Wild and solid post-punk tunes that stick to your ribs. I'll be keeping that, um, punchy, spare and athletic feel going while I confront tonight's projects, including some smut-writing and dinner with the SO's parents.

You needed an invite code to get an LJ then - the fandom buddies I thanked were the ones who gave me one, and also gave me tips and advice.

I was bi-fannish then, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. The entry for November 24, 2002 goes partly as follows: Agonizing still over darkslash work in progress, stress recently compounded by reading a story that shall go unnamed that had potential except....it is extremely difficult to write about hot nasty m/m sex and keep the feel Tolkienesque, for reasons that I suppose are pretty obvious. Attempts to render it in grand language and supposedly culture-appropriate idioms are virtually always unintentionally hilarious, which is why all my efforts to date have been intentionally funny, to head that problem off at the pass. Lord knows using "elfhood" with a straight face is way beyond my meager powers.

But sex isn't really the problem here. Characterization is the problem. Goddamn first-person POV. What was I thinking?

That tells me I was working on The Ring and the Crown at the time....which eventually won a Mithril Award, so I must have done something right.

So, still here, still writing. Fans of Hillbilly Sherlock, rejoice, we're planning to post Chapter 2 of "The Bone Fiddle" today.

It was amazing that an open category got two winners that had so much in common (including both being awesome). I really didn't cheat with the marks, honest! And the drama winner the following year was good too; that had Morgoth in it, as I recall.

And, as it happens, [livejournal.com profile] tyellas was the dedicatee of "TR&TC" anyway - she'd asked for Silmarillion villain stories for her birthday, so that's what I came up with!

I was a judge in that category the next year, as a past winner, and I totally voted hard for that Morgoth story. It was gen, and it was a Cthulhu Mythos fusion/crossover, and it was so creepy and brilliant. I'd never seen that author around before or since.

I think s/he is part of the Burping Troll collective, but I don't know whether s/he has published anything else solo. Sadly.
